about

Every now and then, the perfect line comes that leads to a song. My very good friend Lindy Hearne paves the way ahead for Barb Siftar and I by a decade so when he turned 70, I hoped for an inspiration for a song. Spending some time with him that summer, his gentle and unwavering kind style inspire the line of The Gentle Man from Texas, and it just took some time for the rest of it to unfold.

This was my first shot at Texas Two Step rhythm and I almost maintained it through some of the song...;) It is definitely an homage to the Texas Swing Band Asleep At The Wheel, including the break at the bridge - which totally cracked me up when they came to me...:
"Oh, the mellow tones of Texas,
Are the ones from Lindy’s heart,
You can hear it on the highway,
If you’ve an 8-track in your car…"

I was so pleased when his lovely and talented wife (Lynn Adler) was able to play the recording for him on his birthday with his beautiful and gifted daughter Kate (awesome guitarist and songwriter in her own right...) there to share in the unveiling.

I have been so fortunate to have good friends with whom I have played music with for a long, long time.

This is one of few songs that I have actually pulled out a genuine electric guitar on... the twangy lead is a Fender Stratocaster I bought years ago.

lyrics

The Gentle Man From Texas

Verse 1:
G
Now down in Fort Worth way,
D7
A young boy would sing and play,
D7 G
In folk groups and in choirs,
G G7
Every chance he could,
C C+
He was quite a handsome fellow,
G E7
With a voice so calm and mellow,
A7 D7
That folks would settle down and say “Yee hah that guy is good…”
G
So he traveled near and far,
D7
To get away from the wrecking yard,
D7 B7
But the Lone Star State would call him back home again,
C C+
So he started a family,
G E7
Back in Texas so he could be…
A7
A faithful voice the wind could carry,
D7
Right across the Texas prairie,

Chorus:
(D7) G D7
He’s the gentle man from Texas,
D7 G G7
The gentle man from Goolsby’s Pool,
C C+
Instead of fighting, he sings,
G E7
His six-shooter is his six strings,
A7
And trouble goes a-runnin’,
D7
When it hears his guitar strummin’,
G D7
Cause he’s the gentle man from Texas,
D7 B7
The gentle man from Goolsby’s Pool,
C C+
When hard times come along,
G E7
He brings comfort in every song,
A7 D7 G
When the gentle man from Texas says “I love you…”

Verse II
G
Now he cut a bunch of records,
D7
As he grew his family,
D7
He taught hundreds of kids to play guitar,
G G7
And even ukulele,
C C+
And even if the bills were pilin’,
G E7
He still’d keep pickin’ and smilin’,
A7
For greener fields are never far,
D7 G
With faithful heart and a Gibson guitar,
G
So he moved out to the country,
D7
With the love-of-his-life to be,
D7 B7
Organic song farmers of the purest kind,
C C+
Cause even if it’s dry or flooding,
G E7
A new song’s always budding,
A7
For hard times they will never last,
D7
So you should never let a good tune pass,

Chorus:
Instrumental of Chorus
C7 …..(key change to F)
Bridge to the tune of “Yellow Rose of Texas”

F
Oh, the mellow tones of Texas,
F
Are the ones from Lindy’s heart,
C
You can hear it on the highway,
F D7
If you’ve an 8-track in your car…
(Back to key of G)

Verse 2:
G
So the kids and grandkids gather round,
D7
To hear him sing his song,
D7
And he tells them of the road and friends,
G G7
He’s made the whole year long,
C C+
And in his songs he never ceases,
G E7
To give credit to the Prince of Peace who has,
A7
Given him the foundation of,
D7
The way he shares unconditional love…
G
Now he travels the country wide,
D7
(Singing with) The love-of-his-life by his side,
D7 B7
As they try to help the world to understand,
C C+
That we should live as sisters and brothers,
G E7
And that Texas is for Lovers!
A7
And life would be more appetizing,
D7
If we all did more harmonizing…

Chorus
