Song To Myself Friend, I've seen you walking with your head hanging low, No, you can't hide those feelings, somehow they will show, I'm hearing your fear of the future, There's something I'd like to say, Why don't you start loving yourself and live for today. Friend, I hear you talking that your out on your own, Find some strength in your friendship(s) and you won't be alone, Your best friend is always with you, bury pride and be proud. Ahead and behind are just states of mind cause you're living now. And when the skies turn grey, You know there's light behind the clouds, And don't be afraid of the rain. For it takes a rainy day, To show the Changer and the Changed, Find your light and shine it out. Oh, friend, I've got that feeling, That as time passes by, We will keep on discovering, All the reasons why, The answers are all inside us, If we'll just take the time, You can keep on looking for rainbows, I've already found mine...

Family Ties 04:56
Family Ties Brother to brother, sister to mother, It seems to happen just by chance, Do we talk to each other when there's nowhere else to turn? Sister to brother, father to mother, What can we learn in a moment's glance? We need to be forgiving to get over bridges burned... Chorus: And what can I give you but time? And what can you give me but patience? Is there any way to realign our lives? After we've gone in so many different directions? Well I see a family as people held together by their history, We love one another though it's painful to realize, We are mirrors of each other, framed by our family ties. Brother to father, why even bother, Do the patterns remain the same? Are there winners and losers, Or just picky choosers in the game? Sister to sister, its Lord how I missed her, And we're back on the merry-go-round, I guess with long lost love, There's a whole lot of junk to be found. Chorus: Bridge: And why when so far from home, Is it the only place I want to be? And when finally there, to feel so all alone, Guess being middle of the road, Doesn't help to bring me close, I need to share the heavy load, With those who care for me. Person to person, let's quit the rehearsing, And be who we really are.... Whoever that is.... it's so damn hard to tell at home, And stranger to stranger, let's laugh at the danger, Of the new reality, When I find the old you, And you find the old me in me....

Count On Me 03:01
Count On Me If I'm talking 'bout justice well what do you see? (That its gonna be a struggle and you can count on me.) If I'm talking about justice then what do you believe? (That justice is a struggle and you can count on me.) (Whoa, oh!) I'm gonna try a little harder. (Whoa, oh!) To be all I can be. (Whoa, oh!) I'm gonna push a little farther. Cuz if justice is struggle you can count on me. 2. Freedom 3. World Peace 4. Loving

Back Doors 04:02
Back Doors There's blood on my hands, And tears on my arms, And they are both from another land, And though I've no weapon, I still feel the shame, For what I pay to my government, Chorus: For I am taxed for the privilege to go and help out the poor, And to keep education alive I pay a little bit more, But mostly I'm taxed to go into others' back doors... And what is for? More. Do you really love peace? Do you really hate war? Do you really want democracy? Because sometimes with freedom, People learn how to breathe, And they can sense of your breath, The smell of greed. Chorus: Hiding in Honduras, And in El Salvador, Looking for somewhere else to go, This time Nicaragua, In the name of peace, And beating the Soviets to the back door... Chorus (2): For I've never seen a Latino with a Russian tongue, But I've heard "los pobres" (the poor) cry for food and not guns, And it's beyond good and bad, It just seems to stay sad along... If you're not on the "right", then you're wrong.... And what is it for? More.....

The Future is Mine There's a light up ahead in a tower, And I feel I'm afraid of its glow, For the night can't withhold all its power, And it dangers I future I know. Chorus: And I'll fight, fight, fight, For the future is mine, And live, live, live, As I believe, There's a loaded gun, Aimed at everyone, And that's not my idea, Of being free For I am so young and I'm worried, For my children will live on this land, And the problems aren't solved when their buried, Their solved when they bury the plans. Chorus Let's us hold all our hands together, Let our hearts make us strong in our stand, Let the sun, wind, and sea give us power, As we show all our love for the land.... Last Chorus: And I'll fight, fight, fight, For the future is mine, And live, live, live, As I believe, There's a loaded gun, Aimed at everyone, And that's not my idea, Of being free And I'll fight, fight, fight, For the future is mine, And live, live, live, As I believe, When the air is clear of the things that I fear, I'll know in my heart that I am free.

Simple Gifts 03:41
Simple Gifts You have called to me on the phone, You have been with me in my home, You are with me when I feel alone, You give to me such a simple gift, You are such a simple gift. Wrapped in light, your smile as a bow, Your gentle presence that I have known, You shine so bright you light up my home, You give to me such a simple gift, You are such a simple gift. And on the holidays, We try to pay, For what we’ve already received. We can’t give enough, To surpass that love, It’s all we’ll ever need. Records and sweaters wrapped in a box, Underwear and dozens of socks, Try to say what the heart cannot, That you are enough for me, You are enough to me, To me you are, Such a simple gift.

ABOUT LISTENING

Please note that you should adjust the volume on your computer or phone once the song starts as I think Bandcamp starts every tune at a pretty loud volume which can affect the quality of sound.

Speaking of which, listening to these recordings here (in WAV file format) is the closest you may get to an original recording. Many songs that you hear in an MP3 format are degraded in that the compression of the file size causes a loss in the quality of the sound. I am glad that Bandcamp utilizes this system so you can hear the highest quality online.

My songs are copyrighted however I offer them free for your listening and downloading pleasure.

I encourage you to click individually on each song as that will provide you with the both the story and context behind the song plus the lyrics.

If a song is meaningful for you or you have a question or comment, I would enjoy hearing from you and your response to them. Please feel free to email me at bmilford@thomasu.edu .

ABOUT "COUNT ON ME"

After Barb and I had firmly established our footing with performing together and doing music leadership at conferences, it seemed logical that a collaborative recording would be a good idea. However, an album can be a complex and expensive adventure. We were so fortunate to work with great people like our recording engineer Coleman Rogers, who had a wealth of studio experience (he was recording the incredible duo, The Story, right before our project). Coleman was good humored, supportive, and skilled.

One of my roommates from Inman Street where I had an apartment, Karen Green, was a graphic designer and she did the layout for the album. Our good friend, Jeanne Mockard, did the photography. And I was really happy with the result because in the good ol' days - albums covers were things I spent hours looking at while listening to music. I felt like ours had a lot of information and really interesting and fun photographs on it reflecting the recording process.

We were also really please that a friend of ours, Christina Robb, who was a writer for the Boston Globe, did a review of the album and provided some wonderful compliments that we could market the album with - such as "Barb Siftar has the vocal clarity of the early Judy Collins" and that "Bill Milford is one of the best of the new wave of singer songwriters...".

I was notified that for one month during 1987 that it was the top rated folk album in the Boston area on WUMB - THE folk station in Boston. This is probably due to a devoted cohort of friends calling up the station and requesting to hear song from it.

It was a fun project to record and I will always remember the ill-fated call I received from Discmakers - the company we used to press the albums and manufacture the cassettes. One of the reps called and said "Hey, I want to let you know about this new format called CDs. A lot of artists are choosing to do CDs instead of albums. They are smaller, the sound quality is great, and music is kept in a digital file." Well it made no sense to me... you had to buy a special machine to play it - who was going to do that. It was so small, we'd have to create a book to get all of our artwork and photos in it - who wants to read a book? You should also know that when another of my Inman Street roommates, Paul, who worked for Sprint, told me about portable cell phones - I was like "who would want to carry a phone around with them all the time - that's a crazy idea..." So I've learned my instincts regarding technology are kind of weak. So I still have 50 albums in my garage and am glad to hear they are coming back in vogue... let me know if you want one.

In any case, "Count On Me" is an album that is a sign of those times. Very folky, very singer-songwritey, very progressive politics but it is mostly grounded in the theme of the album "Songs of Friends and Struggles". The songs are about being a 20 something during the 80's and grasping on to the power and struggle of love, friends, and community.
