This Day 04:01
This Day A D A G There's a new light that shines ev'ry morning, A D A G And ev'ry beam is a dream come true D A G And you've the power inside to ride Em A Those dreams your whole life through. You've got to open your eyes ev'ry morning, You've got to shake the sleep right out of your head. You've got the world at the door, If you can only drag it out of bed. (And then you will say) G A D "This day will bring good things to me, G D A And the morning light will fill my soul. G A D F#7 Bm And I will make my spirit sing through me. Em A G A I'm gonna hold on tight, never gonna let it, Em A Em A Hold on tight, never gonna let it, Em A G A D Hold on tight, never gonna let it go. There's a challenge for you ev'ry morning, To find the life within your own heart, And the roots from the past will help Shape the task that you start. There's something new to be found ev'ry morning, Shake the dust from your wings and you'll fly, Leave your fears on the ground For there's hope to be found in the sky. (Then you're gonna find) Repeat Chorus William F. Milford © 1983

Jimbo’s Gone To Zimbabwe Look, I see the moon Is it my only way home to you, To share a dream that I hope will come true, That tonight you look upon that moon, too. So far away. And yet so close at hand. I can only believe in the plans, And the gifts you’ve given to me. Tonight I’ll do the dishes, Tomorrow I’ll shower when I rise, And if this damn rain keeps coming down, I’ll be cursing the clouds in the sky, But since Jimbo’s gone to Zimbabwe, Lord, You’ve opened up my eyes. So I pray for rain for Zimbabwe. And life to not pass me by. There’s a meal upon the table, Scattered on a half dozen plates, Cause my belly is full and my energy’s low, What’s left over will be thrown out like waste. But since Jimbo’s gone to Zimbabwe, Lord, you’ve opened up my eyes, So I pray for food for Zimbabwe, And life to not pass me by. Awareness has its price, Of insight, And sleepless nights. And I have the choice to be more aware, Or more alone. Within the conscious mind, Decisions can be defined, By the road marked by love, That takes me home. And now it’s three o’clock in the morning, And I’ve turned on the late night news, All the politicians preaching how they’re gonna bring peace, Gives me the “you ain’t said nothing new” blues. But since Jimbo’s gone to Zimbabwe, Lord, You’ve opened up my eyes. So I pray for peace for Zimbabwe, And life to not pass me by. Since Jimbo’s gone to Zimbabwe, Lord, you’ve opened my eyes, So I pray for Jim and Zimbabwe and life to not pass me by...

Forever Disarm How many people will cry out the word? How many voices will it take till their heard? And how many votes can be cast aside until they're assured? We'll bring no harm forever, forever, disarm... How many people will go without jobs? And how much of their taxes will pay for nuclear bombs? And many hungry people are fed as we feed a war fund? If you want to save lives forever, forever, disarm... The scientists say that they can protect the populace, Physicians all say there's no way to cure its disease, The clergy cries high "Who gave who the right to play God with us?" And the people are yelling "Slow down! Just give us a freeze!" Instrumental And how many lives will be cast aside until their assured, We'll bring no harm forever, forever, disarm... Forever, forever, disarm... 1. We've got the hearts, We've got the minds, We've got the power to see, That peace through love, Will bring unto us, True liberty! 2. How many people? 3. It's going to take all of our voices! 4. Forever, forever, disarm....

Forever More 05:50
Forever More My father died, when I was three, My father died when I was nine, My father's now a part of his bed, And he's dying all the time... And it seems like all he can say, Is "Where is this God of mine?" "Where is this God of mine?" There's a crash in Chicago, There's a little known war, There's a flood raging Thailand, And a child stillborn, And those who are grieving, And all those who mourn, Say "Where is this God of mine?" "Where is this God of mine?" And I say that God, Is the first to cry, And I say that God, Is with them when they die, And I say that God, Is the reason why, The Lord will greet them at the door, To give them life forever more. There's a lover despairing, There's a fire in a church, There's a child whose been battered, And a mother who has to search, And those who are wondering, And all those who hurt, Say "Where is this God of mine?" "Where is this God of mine?" And I say that God, Is in the pain of those who feel, And I say that God, Is in the souls of those who kneel, And I say that God, Is in the hearts of those who are healed, The Lord will greet them at the door, To give them life forever more. And I say that God, Is the first to cry, And I say that God, Is with them when they die, And I say that God, Is the reason why, The Lord will greet them at the door, To give them life forever more.

I Am Always With You D Em D Em D Em D I am always with you, I am all ways with you, D Em D Em D Em D I am always with you, I am all ways with you. G D Like the father said to the son, G A D "There are some things that must be done, G D And though your journey goes far from home, Em A You are not alone!" A daughter leaves her mother to go Out to make a home of her own, And though they may be miles apart, She lives on her heart. I am always with you, I am all ways with you, I am always with you, I am all ways with you. And though from loved ones we separate, (The) love we've had will stay with us always, Love doesn't stop. No, it does not end, It just begins again. Like the mother said to the son, "There are some things that must be done, Tell the world of the love you have known, (And show them) they are not alone." I am always with you, I am all ways with you, I am always with you, I am all ways with you. - William F. Milford © 1982.

Song For A New Age I have a subtle vision of what I can do for peace, I see myself in a battlefield and fighting has finally ceased, I see a soldier in the distance - young, brave and strong, I approach him slowly, carefully, and ask if I can walk along. I wondered if he could share his feelings, Of how he felt at this time, He said he would but only if I agreed to tell him mine. Chorus: So I said "Johnny put down your weapon, Johnny put down your gun, Johnny put aside all you've been told for a new age of life has begun. Johnny put down your weapon, Johnny put down your gun, Johnny put aside all you've been told for a new age of life has begun." He spoke to me of his worrying, He spoke to me of his fear, I said if we could talk for awhile perhaps his mind would clear, He told me it made sense to him that "might is right" to strong, But if freedom was worth fighting for, then he had to go along... Chorus He told me of the challenges he felt throughout the world, There seemed to be so much crisis, his mind was in a whirl, Then he told me of his lover at home where he wanted so much to be, But to have safety in this chaos, "Well, you have to fight to be free...." Chorus I spoke of August, 1945 and how it made me feel, Hundreds of thousands dead in such a short time, Nuclear death now is real, That bomb has changed our lives in so many ways, And that it's still seen as possibility, I can't support the minds who'd destroy so much, I can't support that mentality... I said "John, I respect your intention, That you'd fight for freedom shows a heart that is true, But the greatest challenge of our lifetime, Is to see what love can do, Fighting for peace is such an old answer, It seems we've always tried that one, But what if peace was something worth loving for....? Then the battle has just begun..... Chorus

Would You Like To Take A Walk With Me Would You Like To Take A Walk With Me? The night seems so right, Just made for walking, We don't have to talk or do anything, It just seems a nice night for a walk... Would you like to put your hand in mine, Just for this walk, It's such a short time. The touch of your hand would feel so divine, It seems a nice night for some love. We could be, As happy as two pod-ly peas, And if you give my hand a squeeze, We can walk further to the river, And catch the cool breeze, Would you like to sit and watch the sunset, The night seems so right for a nice sunset sit, And if you give me a smile, I'll kiss you a bit, I think I've had enough of this walk, Would you like to spend the night, Under the stars, I'll keep you warm , If you stay in my arms, A little bit of loving never did know one harm, It seems a nice night for some love. You will find, Magic in ourselves intertwined, And even though its hard to believe, It's really me loving you, And you loving me, Who could believe? Of you and me as a "we"? Would you like to see the sunrise with me, The morning's so right for some sunrise seeing, And as we start a new day, It's only right that I say, "Are you ready for another short walk?" It seems like everything has gone so right, We should go walking most every night, And all I have to say, "Is would you like to go with me for a walk..."

In Your House In your house, I can see, All the worries in my life, I carry with me, And you say, Come to me, And they shall be mine, And lift up your hearts, And you'll find peace, For all your time. Chorus: And I will sing, I do believe, And give to you, What you give to me, And I will love, To show your way, And I will say, I do believe, Through your eyes, I can see, All the life that's in my life, That shines for me, And you say, Shine on your brothers and sisters, As I shine in you, And lift up your hearts, And you find peace, Your whole life through. Chorus: In my heart, I have fear, Am I alone? Or are you near? And you say, Look all around you, What do you see? If love does not make life, Then life was not by me... Chorus

How Warm I Feel That I Should Be The Object Of Your Attention Well, I have seen some brighter days, Being here with you. And though those days have come and gone, Our love's still shining through, Tonight while I am dreaming, I'll feel your warm embrace, And cuddled up close by your side, I gently touch your face. Between us goes a river now, And love so smoothly flows, As we sit on our separate shores, We leave space so we grow, Together, we are lovers, And we're lovers on our own, Though I can hardly wait and see, How you've changed and grown. And God knows that I am missing you, And I want you here with me, But now I'm feeling stronger, More than I thought I could be, So think of me, And I'll think of you, And we'll see where we are.... And you know that my warm embrace, Isn't very far. I love you for your kindness, And all that we have done. How warm I feel that I should be the object of your attention. How warm I feel that I should be the object of your attention.

ABOUT LISTENING

Please note that you should adjust the volume on your computer or phone once the song starts as I think Bandcamp starts every tune at a pretty loud volume which can affect the quality of sound.

Speaking of which, listening to these recordings here (in WAV file format) is the closest you may get to an original recording. Many songs that you hear in an MP3 format are degraded in that the compression of the file size causes a loss in the quality of the sound. I am glad that Bandcamp utilizes this system so you can hear the highest quality online.

My songs are copyrighted however I offer them free for your listening and downloading pleasure.

I encourage you to click individually on each song as that will provide you with the both the story and context behind the song plus the lyrics.

If a song is meaning for you or you have a question or comment, I would enjoy hearing from you and your response to them. Please feel free to email me at bmilford@thomasu.edu .

ABOUT "SONGS FOR A NEW AGE"

This was my first solo venture after doing the recording of "Roots and Wings" with Barb Siftar and Fran McKendree. That recording, along with this one, was engineered by John Todd (HT Recording) in Dennis, MA - Cape Cod. So it was a bit of a drive from Cambridge, MA down to John's studio but he was a dedicated partner in this process - putting in some long hours and then getting up and teaching music at a high school, I believe.

My good friend from high school, Donna Urquhart, did the artwork for the cassette cover and I believe the concept I pitched was being principled -ie taking a stand on something - helps people stand out from the crowd.

The idea of "Songs For A New Age" was not so much about embracing "new age" philosophies - but of seeing some hope that a new age or time of peace might come about... My political awareness was centered around disputes over nuclear power, nuclear proliferation, women's rights, US interventions in Central America, etc.

The collection of songs were largely what I was performing at the time and people asked about getting recordings especially of "I Am Always With You" and "Blessing for Life". I remixed many of the songs to add some bass and percussion etc. later on.

If you can read the cover sideways, you will see that I list the lovely and talented Barb Siftar as providing "Supporting Vocals and Vocal Support". We only lived a couple of blocks away from one another and it was an exciting time to see where all of this music was going to go....
