This was written for my good friend, Kate, and her partner, Cathy. This was my first attempt at something Motown-ish and I had a lot of fun in putting it together. And while I sure wish I could sing better, this attempt shows a lot of heart and courage on my part...;)
There are all sorts of fun references in here. I love the line about spoons being locked up tight. Kate founded the Threshold Choir so the not knowing what is going to happen when she shows up refers to the fact that she often sings by the bedside of folks who are near death. So she may indeed "sing and lift you right out of this world..." Also the line about how the "powerful lay down at her feet" refers to the fact that for years she has gone to Thailand and sung to elephants - and indeed there is one that when he hears her voice, lays down at her feet.
I am blessed to have such remarkable friends with such incredible stories...
lyrics
She’s My Girl
She’s got a smile so bright,
That she’s as brilliant as the sunshine at noon,
She’s got a heart full of light,
And she’s captivating as the full moon,
And when the sun goes down and we are in for the night,
We’re like two spoons in a drawer that is locked up tight,
And when you lean into her love, everything is alright with the world,
Because she is my girl…
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl,
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (low)
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (falsetto)
She’s got a funky little walk,
She’s know how to take the world in stride,
Your heart listens when she talks,
But before you know it, you are in for the ride,
When she shows up at your door you feel excitement and fear,
Because you don’t what may happen whenever she’s near,
And when she sings she may lift you up and right out of this world….
Because she is my girl…
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl,
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (low)
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (falsetto)
If only,
You knew her the way that I do,
Then you’d be,
Singing her praises, too…..
For she is my world….
Because she is my girl….
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl,
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (low)
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (falsetto)
She’s got a twinkle in her eye,
That lets you know that she is so kind and sweet,
But she has strength in her heart,
That makes the powerful lay down at her feet,
And when she tells me she loves me -I say “I love you more”,
Our loving cup runneth over but that is what that cup’s for,
To have and to hold and to spill it all over the world,
Because she is my girl…
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl,
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (low)
(Do-do-do….do-do-do) She’s my girl, (falsetto)
