"Love with all your might, hug your loved ones tight, if just for a moment of time..."
This is my homage to 9/11 - the verses reflect my experience, how I heard about it, what I heard while watching it, and what I think about in reflection to it. And indeed, I was on the phone with my friend Neil talking about, if I recall, how my issues with recurrent melanoma shaped my view of things. One day, you're fine, the next there is some issue that reframes everything.
Then my wife, Joann, called me from work saying everybody there was talking about an accident in New York City with the World Trade Towers. I turned the TV on and a short while later the 2nd plane hit the south tower. Joann and I used to live in NYC for about 3 years so that is the reference to our "old stomping ground".
In the following days there were tons of personal stories and testimonials shared on TV and one particularly moving for me was a guy from Connecticut who had seemingly lost his wife in one of the towers. Although clearly grief stricken, he said very straightforwardly with just a tinge of regret that he just wished he had hugged her and been able to thank her for being such a good person in his life.
As with all bumps in life, I like to use the last verse as a guiding principle.
So we get back on the horse,
And keep a mighty tight grasp,
For in the space of a moment,
We’re now on a new path,
And we mourn and we stumble,
And we take time to cry,
And then we celebrate love,
Like it’s the 4th of July.
lyrics
Moment of Time
I was drinking some coffee,
I was sitting at home,
I was talking bout life,
With a friend on the phone,
We spoke how you never know,
What alters your mind,
And how quickly it all changes,
In a moment of time.
Then another friend called and said,
Turn on the TV,
You won’t believe,
What your eyes will see,
Two towers burning.
In our old stomping ground,
And I watched all morning,
As they both came down.
CHORUS
And it’s hard to believe,
That life can change so fast,
As we breathe each moment away,
And it’s hard to imagine,
How things could have been,
Had it been some other way.
And all the hard lessons,
And morals we learn,
Seem to have the same meaning in mind,
Love with all your might,
Hug your loved ones tight,
If just for a moment of time.
I heard “I never said goodbye,
When my wife went away.
I never let her know,
How much she meant that day,
I wish that I could live that day,
Over again,
I’d hug her and I’d thank her,
Just for being my friend.”
CHORUS
BRIDGE
In the heart of confusion,
Is the feeling you might,
Never have known what was real,
But the heart of survival,
Is the faith in what’s right,
And taking time to heal.
So we get back on the horse,
And keep a mighty tight grasp,
For in the space of a moment,
We’re now on a new path,
And we mourn and we stumble,
And we take time to cry,
And we celebrate love,
Like it’s the 4th of July.
