about

This was written for the memorial service for my good friend and mentor, Dotti Siftar. When I was 13 years old and in my first year at Winni (an intergenerational family camp I have attended annually every year since..) Dotti took me under her wing and encouraged my guitar playing, song writing, and leadership. She was a quintessential folk singer - rich in the history of folk music, and powerful in her voice and performance. However, the thing I will most remember is her kindness and enthusiasm for ALL people. She was a psychiatric nurse by profession and you never heard a dismissive word from her about anyone. She was thrilled when I started performing with her daughter, Barb, and I was so honored to be able to witness the care in which Barb and her family supported Dotti in her elder years. And also to see how Barb has picked up the mantle that Dotti and her husband Bob shared in recreational leadership - to re-create the day, in laughter, dance, and play. My hope in the composition was to write something that honored both the person and the legacy.

I have played this at many memorial services since as it is one of the few "up" songs that can fit the setting. Many people comment and resonate with the line :
"Let us honor all we knew,
By who we are,
And what we do, "

lyrics

Joy In This Quiet Time

Chorus:
There is joy in this quiet time,
I have Peace Like A River,
Flowing in my mind,
My soul is singing now,
Hallelujah Anyhow,
And there is joy in this quiet time.

Beloved friends,
Gathered here today,
Let our hearts be lifted,
By this life that's come our way,
Let us lean on one another,
And share that love with others,
For there is joy in this quiet time.

Chorus:

Broken hearts,
May you all be mended,
May your tears make dull your pain,
Let us honor all we knew,
By who we are,
And what we do,
For there is joy in this quiet time.

Chorus:

Bridge:
Let us lift our voice in song,
To this love that makes us strong!

(Key Change)

Now let us make,
Our time of healing,
Let our hearts be weaved as one,
Let us re-create this day,
In laughter, dance, and play,
For there is joy in this quiet time.
