This haunting melody lends itself to the DADGAD open tuning on guitar which provides several drone and dissonant tones throughout the song. This lyrical adaptation of the traditional hymn is my re-working of another folk version of the song that included more contemporary lyrics around the "today and long ago..." . I recall adding the last verse as a statement of when kindness does not come from others, sometimes we need to provide it to ourselves...
lyrics
In the Bleak Mid-Winter
D Bm Em A
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
D Bm Em A D
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
G F#m Bm Em A
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
D Bm Em A D
In the bleak midwinter, today and long ago.
In the bleak midwinter, will you take me in?
Troubles all around me – where do I begin?
Worries weigh upon my heart, Woe on woe on woe,
In this bleak midwinter, today and long ago.
What have I to offer, to give your burden ease?
Comfort for the moment, a space to find your peace,
A place to share the fire, warmth for you to know,
That in this bleak mid-winter, here you have a home.
In the bleak mid-winter, love can give us heart,
Kindness for our journey, Strength to help us start,
Passion when we’re weary, Faith for us to know,
In this bleak mid-winter, hold on, don’t let go.
Hold on, don’t let go.
Hold on, don’t let go.
